Ruling Awami League`s General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam Thursday heaved a sigh of relief while expressing his reaction to the executions of five condemned killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members.
Syed Ashraf, also the Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (LGRD,C), said the rule of law was established in the country through executions of the five convicted killers.
He said the executions proved that nobody could escape the grip of law after committing crimes.
The five condemned killers were hanged in the Dhaka Central Jail early Thursday.
Talking to journalists at Dhaka Sheraton Hotel in the afternoon, Ashraf stated that the nation was freed from shame through the executions.
The six other condemned killers, who are absconding abroad, would be brought back home to be placed on trial, the AL leader said, adding the six convicts would also meet the same fate.
The Supreme Court (SC) in a landmark judgment on November 19 last year upheld the High Court verdict that confirmed capital punishment to 12 former army officers, including the five executed killers who filed separate petitions with the Appellate Division earlier this month seeking a review of the apex court`s judgment.
Following the hearing, the Appellate Division, on January 27, 2010, dismissed their pleas that paved the way for executing the five killers any time within January 31.
